Yet again, manager specials

Posted on June 5th, 2008 in Kroger, Manager Specials by sharon

Sometimes I feel like a broken record because I harp on and on about shopping for manager specials.  Tonight simply reinforced that being willing to purchase soon-to-expire products can save you bundles!  Typically, I’ll purchase manager specials, repackage them and stick them in the deep freeze.

Here’s how I did tonight:

Pistachios - reg $7.99; MS $1.99
Salsa - reg $4.99; MS $.99
Broc sprouts (organic) - reg about $3 or $4; MS $.89
Horizon 1 gal fat free - reg about $5min; MS $2.99
Pediasure - reg $10.99 min; MS $6.99

I hit the motherload of manager specials tonight!

I passed up the Horizon milk because we wouldn’t have been able to use it quickly enough. But I did purchase two packages of Pediasure.

My family LOVES pistachios. I love to snack on them but they’re a luxury item.  I used to buy them as gifts for my dad because he loves them so much but can’t afford to anymore.  But tonight, I bought *gasp* 15 bags for $29.85.  If they were regular price, that would have been $119.85.  Yes, a savings of NINETY DOLLARS.

Next week, the kids will help decorate a big jar and Grandpa will get some pistachios for Father’s Day. The rest will go into the freezer for special treats for me!

So keep an eye out for manager specials at your grocery store. Get brave and ask an employee when they typically pull items for manager specials and pattern your shopping schedule to match. You’ll be amazed at how much you can save!

Manager Specials

Posted on May 6th, 2008 in How To, Kroger, Manager Specials by sharon

One of my favorite savings opportunities is manager specials at my local Kroger. And don’t think that you can’t couple manager’s specials with coupons because you can!

This past week, I picked up 5 Fresh Express Gourmet Express prepared salads, normally about $4 or $5 each. I got them for $1.79 each. A month ago, I found these on manager’s special and there were $1 blinkies hanging on the shelf. That was a happy shopping trip!

Gallons of milk were on sale for $1.99 or less; even the whole milk was less than $2 a gallon.

Oscar Mayer Mini Hot Dogs for $.99 a bag. Now I have about half a dozen of these in the freezer for my daughter’s birthday party.

  • Always set some room aside in your freezer for your manager specials. If I had the room, I would have bought a dozen of those gallons of milk and froze them for later!
  • Get friendly with your store employees. Ask when they go through and pull products for Manager Special mark downs. Is it at night? First thing in the morning? Ask!
  • Manager Specials do not count towards your % of savings shown on your receipt. This irks me to no end! I wish they would show up as a sale item, but they don’t. They count as a regular price and don’t help you up your percentage of savings. It’s a small thing, but it irks me.

ROGER STORES OFFER CUSTOMERS FREE GROCERIES
Beginning May 2, New Program Gives Kroger Customers an Extra $30, $60 or $120 When They Turn Their Tax Refund or Economic Stimulus Checks into Kroger Gift Cards

CINCINNATI, Ohio, April 16, 2008 – The Kroger Co. (NYSE: KR) said today that beginning May 2, 2008, customers can receive free groceries through a gift card program available exclusively in Kroger stores. The program allows Kroger customers to exchange their tax refund or economic stimulus checks for a Kroger gift card with an extra $30.00, $60.00 or $120.00 added to it. Gift card amounts correspond to the payment amounts outlined by the Internal Revenue Service for the federal economic stimulus program.

For example:
Load This Amount Onto A Kroger Gift Card: Receive Kroger Gift Card(s) Valued At This Amount:
$300.00 $330.00
$600.00 660.00 (2 gift cards valued at $330.00 each)
$1,200.00 $1,320.00 (4 gift cards valued at $330.00 each)

“Grocery bills represent a significant expenditure for the average American family. In fact, the average family of four spends between $105 and $235 per week* on food purchased at a store and prepared at home,” said David B. Dillon, Kroger chairman and chief executive officer. “Kroger’s program allows our customers to stretch their grocery dollars further. We are excited about the opportunity to touch the lives of millions of families across the country by helping them extend their household budgets through this special program.”

The program will be available throughout Kroger stores nationwide – including Kroger, Baker’s, City Market, Dillons, Fred Meyer, Fry’s, Gerbes, Hilander, Jay C, King Soopers, Owen’s, Pay Less, Ralphs, Smith’s and QFC stores. Kroger customers who are interested in exchanging their refunds or economic stimulus checks should present their check and customer loyalty card at their local store’s Customer Service center from May 2, 2008 through July 31, 2008. The program is limited to one offer per household with a limit of $1,200.00.

Amounts that differ from those outlined above will be turned into gift cards in $300.00, $600.00 or $1,200.00 increments with the bonus amounts added on and the remainder returned to the customer. For example, if a customer has a tax refund or stimulus check of $415.50, the customer will receive a Kroger gift card valued at $330.00 and the remaining $115.50 will be returned to the customer.
